Lord, Your law is perfect, but it could not change us. All it was equipped to do was to show us how desperately we need You, how far we fall below You. Yet even in our weakness, You condescended to love us, to make a way for our communion with You to be restored. I thank You so much for the cross, for the price You paid to redeem us and for its power to change our hearts. I thank You for being the one to change my heart and bring forgiveness where once there was only bitterness and mistrust. I pray that You would heal the hearts of Your people in Chiapas who have suffered much more than I have. I pray that You would change their hearts to be reflections of Yours with forgiveness and charity towards their persecutors, towards those who evict them from their homes, who attack them in front of their children, who try to force them into their own religious practices, who attack their places of worship.

I pray that the light of Your face would shine on that place, on that region, and that Your Holy Spirit would flood into that land and bring freedom with it, for where Your Spirit is, there is also freedom. I pray that the Gospel would be preached in word and deed throughout Chiapas and that the Christians would be a holy example of the blessedness that comes from knowing You. I pray that Your word would free those trapped in centuries of tradition and bring them into a knowledge of the truth. I thank You for Your faithfulness and for Your ability and desire to help Your people, and for the opportunity to come to know You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

One With Them Devotional Excerpt

Here is an excerpt from one of Open Doors’ One With Them Devotionals about the Maldives.

“The Body of Christ in Maldives is very weak and hurting. To be a Christian in this paradise country is a living hell. The few believers are scattered and in hiding for fear that they may lose family, friends, property, and rights if the authorities find out that they are followers of Christ. Getting them together runs the risk of discovery by the government. Quite a number of these believers are also racked with drug and alcohol addiction, which is rampant in the Islands.

“For years, missionaries have tried to bring the gospel into this staunchly Islamic nation. But many have been deported, and to work here has become increasingly difficult and risky. Attempts at translating the Bible into the Dhivehi language have been met with enormous spiritual warfare. Many years ago, those engaged in Bible translation died mysterious deaths. The copies of the translated manuscripts were lost. To date, only portions of the New Testament have been translated, yet this work stands on perilous grounds. The Bible says, “If one part of the body suffers, every part suffers with it.” My dear brothers and sisters, we cannot continue living our comfortable Christian lives if we know that members of our family are suffering.”

Lord, how privileged we are to have an abundance of Your Word in our nation, and how often we squander it. I pray that You would call to prayer a multitude of spiritual warriors around the world to battle for the Maldives. I pray that a complete translation of the Bible into the Dhivehi language would be produced and distributed among the people and that they would receive it with joy and thanksgiving to You. I pray that You would, by Your name, break the bondages of addiction and of fear in their land, that they would by Your Spirit receive true freedom in their hearts, their minds, and their bodies. I pray that Your light would shine abroad in their hearts so that they would overcome by Your blood and by the word of their testimony, which You have provided. I pray that You would do war with the spirits hovering over the Maldives as You warred with the great spirit over Babylon in the book of Daniel. I pray that You would step in and claim Your authority over that land and heal it.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

Heavenly Father, in recent years, many families in our own nation have lost their homes for financial reasons. We have never had to endure, however, losing our homes for our faith. I pray that You would offer Yourself as the dwelling place for these evicted Christians and that they would rest secure knowing that You are their shelter and protection. I pray that they would remember it is You who are their daily bread and their refreshing spring. I pray that Your light would break through the darkness around them so that their persecutors would come to know You.

I also pray that You would increase the resources of the VOM workers in Chiapas. I pray that You would bless their time and effort, that their sowing would reap a hundred, even a thousand fold. I pray that You would bless the minds of their pupils to retain the education offered to them that will help bring them life more abundantly. I pray that You would keep the aid workers and their recipients in perfect peace and in safety. I pray that You would dwell among them and make Your presence known. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Father, no man can come to You unless You call him, so we know that fr every heart You draw, You have a plan. I pray that Your Spirit would not only draw the hearts of Bhutanese to a state of repentance and salvation, but would also stoke in them a passion for a deep and intimate relationship with You. I pray that You would instruct them, not only through qualified Bible teachers and through literature, but by Your indwelling Spirit and Your own voice. I pray that You would speak to them as the prophets and apostles of old, directly and with fire. I pray that as they learn more about You and grow closer to You that they would irrevocably spread the Gospel to the lost around them. I pray also for King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, that You would draw him to repentance and salvation, that his heart would be softened towards believers, and that he would accordingly change the laws and practices of the Bhutanese government to protect all people, regardless of religious affiliation. I pray that You would work through him to bring equal rights to all Bhutanese citizens, and that Your Holy name would be glorified through these miracles. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Father God, so often we overlook opportunities to witness to people around us, friends, neighbors, family members, and even strangers. We sometimes are blind to them, other times we refuse them because of prejudice, fear, or confusion. Please open our eyes to see these as areas where we lack faith in You. Give Your people in Bhutan courage to reach out and witness to their neighbors by their words and their actions, by their love for one another and for their enemies. Let them be an example to us of faith, hope, and love, and bless them for their perseverance, even under the threat and reality of persecution. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Father, we have so many rights that we hold dear in the West. It was by Your wisdom and provision that they were laid out for us as citizens of free nations. I pray that You would bring enlightenment and healing to the  lands where such freedoms are absent. I pray that You would reveal Yourself as the source of all freedom and blessing to the people of Bhutan, that You would make their governors compassionate and respectful of the rights You have endowed Your people with. I pray that You would be the advocate of the suffering ones, the ones denied justice in a corrupt system. I pray that You would both provide relief from these trials, and uphold the Christians in the midst of them. I pray that they would seek You every day, every morning and evening, to seek not only Your provision, but also Your presence. I pray that Your perfect love would cast out all their fears. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Lord, You have opened the doors for the delivery of Your Word to the people who are hungry for it. Whether by balloon or by ocean delivery or by smuggling, You inject Your light into the darkest places and You refresh and encourage Your people with it. I pray that You would do the same work in Bhutan, that You would open up the channels distribution of Bibles and other Christian literatures. I pray that You would provide the proper translations for this people and that there would be no confusion in the reading and understanding of it. I pray that You would provide safety for the people who risk their lives to bring Your Word to the lost and persecuted in Bhutan, and that You would also safeguard the people who receive these Bibles. I pray that You would keep their Bibles safe from confiscation and destruction, that You would hide the owners in the shadow of Your wings and that You Yourself would be their defense and hiding place. May Your love and Your light shine in Bhutan and provoke the salvation of many. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
